The balance between ambient/experimental and classical/jazz is perf - this album is engaging throughout (even the solely minimal ambient track) and its very well constructed - most artists bore me when trying to explore these ideas.. But the sonic hooks/progressions and the detail and subtleties and exclamations and the flow and the playfulness paired with drama keep me in it until the very end. Most people attempting something like this bore me but not this bad boy.
Favorite track: Pocket.
Lara Alarcón (La Plata, 1991) is a vocalist, improviser and composer based in Berlin.
She has been active in the fields of experimental, contemporary and improvised music from a young age. Her strong project is her solo VQ, with which she has been touring and recording with different set ups. She also maintains ongoing collaborations and performs with artists from Argentina, São Paulo, Bern, Zurich, Berlin, and continues expanding.
She has been working with improvised and/or contemporary ensembles directed by her and also as a side vocalist in projects of others. Nevertheless her main field of activity when it comes to groups has been in the shape of collective.
She grew up, studied and performed from a very young age in the city of La Plata, in which later on she co-developed a platform of concert series and label called Numeral or Neue Numeral. With this platform she devoted her practice to the edgy field of improvised, noise and sound-border artistic expressions by promoting and connecting artists from all around.
Even though her vocabulary is related to the abyss of vocal technique in a prosthetic dialectic (with the use of extensions such as amplifiers, radios and other noise devices) she has dived in the field of poetry when she had the opportunity to work with a large collective of diverse artists in the making of a non-released full-length movie.
Within these years of exploration with the performativity of the spoken word she gathered a group of talented friends and developed ELOGIO, a series of songs created under the topic of madness.
Based on the book The Praise of Folly by Erasmo of Rotterdam the lyrics of ELOGIO sings in a satirical and delusional way about love, foolishness, deception, introspection, and the loss of oneself.
Madness is an intrinsic part of oneself and is a necessity to include this concept in our way of building and understanding society.
This six-track album was recorded in 2017 in Casa Frida (Buenos Aires), dropped and then mixed again by Ponche Abraham in Nakao Studio (La Plata).
‘As a souvenir’ to the years of music shared with this group of friends, this album came across genres and time and includes two remixes by Cristian Carracedo Lauretti and Pablo Savini, and a synth-organ feature by Juan Ignacio Sueyro as an homage to Olivier Messiaen’s astounding life story in Quator pour la fin du temps.
ELOGIO is an ode to the extreme of life and feelings, with a trip hop/ power and ‘static’ rhythm, large and twisted melodies, and circular repetition as well as some free jazz moments and catchy choruses.
RECORDED during November 2017 in Casa Frida Estudio by Hernan CARATOZZOLO.
Mixed and mastered by the amazing and effective Ponche ABRAHAM in Estudio Nakao in 2020 and 2021
