An album that is enunciated from the south can open the doors to an endless number of signifiers: the declaration of principles of making jazz from this part of the world, the inspiring Patagonian landscapes, the Zona Sur del conurbano -Federico Solomiewicz's native land where he sowed and harvested the music that summons us here-, and as many etceteras as our imagination desires.
But, for an incurable Borgeano like this writer, the reference to "El Sur", perhaps the best story of the incurable Jorge Luis Borges, is unavoidable. And not only because of the obvious spatial reference in
the title. The tension between the lineages that coexist in the character Juan Dalhmann -one cultured and western, and the other heroic and Creole- are the engine of the story in which two simultaneous deaths coexist: a lonely and civilized one hallucinating in a hospital, and another brave and violent one in a knife fight in the South of the Province of Buenos Aires.
In our contemporary Juan Dalhmann, two lineages also coexist. On the one hand, Western academic music and Afro-American jazz (the latter, responsible for finding Fede and me in countless projects). On the other side also, the wildly beautiful Conurbano, Independiente, the captain of space, neighborhood rock and Athahualpa Yupanqui. The tension between these two lineages is not resolved, it sparks and is the input of this fantastic album, so far his most concise and personal work.
But the concept of the album does not only refer to an origin but also to a direction. From the south to the world enjoy "Desde el Sur", the essential album
by Federico Solomiewicz.

Un álbum que se enuncia desde el sur nos puede abrir las puertas a un sinfín de significantes: la declaración de principios de hacer jazz desde este lugar del mundo, los inspiradores paisajes patagónicos, la Zona Sur del conurbano -tierra nativa de Federico Solomiewicz donde sembró y cosechó la música que aquí nos convoca-, y tantos etcéteras como nuestra imaginación quiera.
Pero, para un borgeano incurable como quien escribe, es ineludible la referencia de “El Sur”, acaso el mejor cuento del incurable Jorge Luis Borges. Y no sólo por la evidente referencia espacial del título. La tensión entre los linajes que conviven en el personaje Juan Dalhmann -uno culto y occidental, y otro heróico y criollo- son el motor del cuento en el que conviven dos muertes simultáneas: una solitaria y civilizada alucinando en un hospital, y otra valiente y violenta en una pelea de cuchilleros en el Sur de la Provincia de Buenos Aires.
En nuestro Juan Dalhmann contemporáneo también conviven dos linajes. Por un lado, la música académica occidental y el jazz afroamericano (éste último, responsable de encontrarnos a Fede y a mí en un sinfín de proyectos). Por otro lado también, el salvajemente hermoso Conurbano, Independiente, el capitán del espacio, el rock barrial y Athahualpa Yupanqui. La tensión entre estos dos linajes no se resuelve, saca chispas y es el insumo de este fantástico disco, hasta ahora su obra más concisa y personal.
Pero el concepto del disco no remite solo a un origen sino a una dirección. Desde el sur hacia el mundo disfruten “Desde el Sur”, el imprescindible disco de Federico Solomiewicz.
